Teeth Grinding & Jaw Pain (Bruxism)

If you wake with an aching jaw, tension headaches, or teeth that feel sensitive for no obvious reason, you may be grinding or clenching, and you'd be far from alone. Clenching and grinding, known clinically as bruxism or parafunctional activity, is one of the most common concerns we see, particularly among busy professionals. Many people do it during the day without noticing; many more do it in their sleep.

The effect on your teeth and jaw

Left unmanaged, grinding and clenching gradually wear down the teeth through attrition, and over time can contribute to tooth damage and even tooth loss. The strain doesn't stop at the teeth: persistent clenching commonly causes jaw ache, headaches, and tension that can extend into the neck and back.

Tooth wear has other causes too, including erosion from dietary acid and abrasion from brushing too hard, so an accurate diagnosis matters. During your examination we assess the pattern of wear carefully to understand exactly what's driving it before recommending anything.

How we can help

  • Custom night guards and splints. We make a range of professionally fitted mouth guards, each suited to different patterns of clenching and grinding, and select the right design for you rather than a one-size-fits-all appliance. A well-made guard protects your teeth while you sleep and can significantly ease jaw tension.

  • Consultations for jaw muscle tension. Where clenching itself needs addressing, not just its effects, we offer private consultations to discuss the options available, including prescription treatments where clinically appropriate. As with everything we do, nothing is recommended unless it is right for you.

  • Prevention and advice. Because grinding is so often linked to stress, we'll also talk honestly about patterns, habits and practical steps, alongside monitoring wear at your routine check-ups.

If your jaw aches, your partner hears you grinding at night, or your teeth are wearing in ways you can't explain, book an examination and we'll get to the bottom of it.
